Some ongoing explorations started earlier this year when we were inspired to delve into burning things... Well, in truth, the fascination with flame may have started much earlier, but with Agent Smolder, we are turning pyromania into design-mania.
Originally we were inspired by Shou Sugi Ban, the Japanese technique of burning cedar, then washing with water to create a naturally fire and insect resistant boards for houses. We played around with the idea of utilizing the method on a product scale. We soon discovered a certain nostalgic feeling associated with the texture of the burnt pieces. The scent and touch of the boards were reminiscent of making s'mores by a campfire, hearing the crackle of the logs and the shiver of the night air. We could not pass up an opportunity to capture these memories in physical form.
